Meet Sean

Sean is both the founder and lead instructor for YOURACTUARYTUTORJA (YATJA). His teaching philosophy is to tailor his teaching approach to fit all students. He is aware that not all students learn in the same way, hence it is important to be equipped with a variety of approaches and delivery methods to address problems.

Actuarial Science is a discipline that assesses financial risks in the Insurance and Finance fields using mathematical and statistical methods. The very nature of Sean’s actuarial profession makes it a seamless activity for him to teach math. His expertise in this field allows him to approach student learning from a dynamic perspective.

Sean has 10 years of tutoring experience that has primarily been focused on preparing students for success on various standardized exams such as CXC, CAPE, SAT, and ACT.  Coupled with the mission to accomplish his student learning goals, Sean mentors each of his students surrounding their academic and career journeys. He has been a mentor for the Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS) program for the past 4 years and recently celebrated his mentee’s high school graduation and acceptance to university 🙂

Nia Laing,
Lead Instructor

Nia Photo for Website.png

In the pursuit of interests spanning from math & science to the arts, Nia has yet to find an honor greater than walking with someone along their educational journey.

Building community during her time at the Immaculate Conception High School helped greatly with attaining:

  • Eight (8) Grade I’s (including Mathematics) and one Grade II in CSEC

  • Ten (10) Grade I’s (including Pure Mathematics) in CAPE Unit I and II

Entrusted with a position on the ICHS Tutoring Club 2018/2019 Executive Body, Nia was able to end her high school chapter in service of a cause she greatly believed in.

Nia then took her practical appreciation of math to begin reading for a BSc in Civil Engineering at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus as a Jamaican recipient of the UWI Open Scholarship. Though an unfamiliar environment, she grounded herself in connecting with peers; leading informal tutoring sessions, and deliberation within the 2020/2021 Executive Body of the Jamaican Association of Students in Trinidad and Tobago.

As an Lead Instructor with YOURACTUARYTUTORJA (YATJA), Nia hopes to share the joy of understanding math with YOU! 🙂
